Loretta Lynn’s Peanut Fudge

Loretta Lynn’s Peanut Butter Fudge Recipe

Loretta Lynn, a towering figure in country music, was not only celebrated for her Grammy-winning songs and captivating life story but also for her delightful culinary creations, especially her peanut butter fudge.

Known for her love of peanut candies, Loretta Lynn often turned to this favorite treat during late-night cravings or even as a way to help her family during tough times. Here’s how to recreate her famous peanut butter fudge, which perfectly captures her spirit in every sweet, creamy bite.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)
  • 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) butter
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1/2 cup maple syrup for extra flavor
  • Unsalted, roasted peanuts, crushed, for topping
  • Salt for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fudge Mixture:
  • In a large saucepan, combine the milk and granulated sugar. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens.
  • Increase the heat slightly to bring the mixture to what Loretta Lynn referred to as a “molten boil.” Aim to reach a temperature between 235°F to 245°F, which is the ideal range for fudge and corresponds to the soft-ball stage in candy-making.
  1. Testing the Fudge:
  • To test if the fudge is ready without a thermometer, drop a small amount into a bowl of cold water. If you can form a soft ball with the mixture that flattens between your fingers, it has reached the correct stage. If it’s too sticky or doesn’t form a ball, continue cooking and testing periodically.
  1. Add the Flavorings:
  • Once the correct temperature is achieved, work quickly to stir in the butter, vanilla, peanut butter, and optional maple syrup until well combined. The mixture will start to set up quickly, so speed is essential.
  1. Set the Fudge:
  • Pour the fudge mixture into a greased 8″x8″ baking pan. Smooth the top with a spatula.
  • Immediately sprinkle the crushed peanuts over the top and press them gently into the surface with the back of a spoon or a ramekin.
  • Finish by sprinkling a little salt over the fudge for an enhanced flavor contrast.
  1. Cool and Cut:
  • Allow the fudge to set at room temperature for several hours until firm.
  • Once set, cut the fudge into squares.
