  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Glaze:

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 24 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix in warm milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla. Beat until well combined.
  2. Knead and Rise: Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface until smooth, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  3. Shape Donuts: Punch down the dough and roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a donut cutter.
  4. Second Rise: Place cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  5. Fry the Donuts: Heat oil to 350°F. Fry donuts in batches until golden brown, about 1 minute per side. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Prepare the Glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Glaze and Serve: Dip each warm donut into the glaze, then set on a rack to dry.
