Country Cabbage Rolls Straight From A Mennonite Kitchen

Follow these steps to create a dish that’s as nourishing as it is delicious.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 (2 rolls each) 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 12 cabbage leaves
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Prep the Leaves: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Blanch the cabbage leaves in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then drain and cool.
  2. Make the Filling: Mix the ground beef, rice, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and garlic powder in a bowl.
  3. Roll the Cabbage: Place the filling on each leaf, roll it up, and tuck in the ends. Arrange the rolls seam side down in a baking dish.
  4. Prepare the Sauce: Combine tomato sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour over the rolls.
  5. Bake Covered: Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 1 hour, or until the meat is cooked and the rolls are tender.
