Blackberry Dumplings

This recipe is a wonderful treat that’s both easy to make and delightful to eat.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dumplings:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup milk

For the Blackberry Sauce:

  • 4 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Blackberry Sauce: In a large saucepan, mix blackberries, sugar, and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes, gently mashing some berries. Add vanilla and cinnamon, and reduce heat to low.
  2. Make the Dumpling Dough: In a bowl, sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in milk to form a dough.
  3. Cook the Dumplings: Return the berry sauce to a simmer. Drop tablespoons of dough into the sauce. Cover and cook for 15 minutes until dumplings are puffed and set.
  4. Serve Warm: Serve the dumplings warm, spooned with extra blackberry sauce. Add whipped cream or ice cream if desired.
